Brilliant introduction to Vivaldi's Choral Masterpieces
07/07/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)
"I bought this CD initially to get the recording of Nulla in mundo pax sincera, which I had heard recently. I knew nothing of Vivaldi's choral works previous to that, and I must say I'm glad I did buy it. All the choral works are brilliant, really uplifting, a must buy."
Vivaldi and Vittorio...an outstanding team

"Vittorio Negri has released 5 CDs on Philips of Vivaldi's choral music. I treasure them as THE best interpretation of Vivaldi's choral music recorded. Today, they may not be available, except for this collection. Negri dances with Vivaldi...His interpretations have grit, and passion, and unbridled enthusiasm, as well as complete understanding of this music. In fact, I have bought, without any hesitation, every choral music disc interpreted by Vittorio Negri. Of course, I also like other interpretations, and have not limited myself to just these, but, if you are beginning to collect, and want to get the best for your money, Vivaldi by Vittorio....THE best! Great Choral Masterpieces, Nothing Short Of This Title

"It is true, you have to have an open ear to receive all the beauty of Vivaldi's joy of creating one or two or many more voices (violine or guitar count as voices too, they are personified by Vivaldi's pen) which by singing together create much more than a mathematical harmony. It is called counterpoint, and very few composers have created it in a manner that seems natural even for us today. Vittorio Negri and The English Chamber Orchestra, as well as all the marvelous soloists and choruses on this CD would have enchanted Vivaldi himself, I am sure of it."
Near Perfection

"Vivaldi is my favourite composer, and after having sung "Gloria" (RV 589), I naturally jumped at the chance to acquire a 'comprehensive' choral works collection of his. All of the pieces on this economical 2-CD set are indeed beautifully rendered, especially "Stabat Mater" and "Beatus Vir," the title track of the latter being one of the best tracks of the set, IMO.
Why only four stars, then? Because of the two "Gloria" versions. Though good, there are much better versions on the Christ Church Cathedral's "Vivaldi Glorias" CD. That being said, however, I highly recommend this collection because it encompasses less commonly performed works of the "Red Priest" as well."
