Could any single disc live up to the title The Only Broadway CD You'll Ever Need? Of course not, though this 76-minute disc gives it a good try. Out of the RCA vaults come original cast performances such as Zero Mostel's "... more »If I Were a Rich Man," Carol Channing's "Hello Dolly," and Oliver's "Consider Yourself." From topnotch revivals come Patti LuPone's "Anything Goes," Peter Gallagher's "Luck Be a Lady," Alan Cumming's "Money," and Bebe Neuwirth's "All That Jazz." Also included are selections from newer shows Titanic and Ragtime. The collection starts to get thin when it has to hunt for available versions of classic songs, ending up with an "America" from Jerome Robbins' Broadway, "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" from the 1979 Oklahoma! revival, and an "Impossible Dream" from Colm Wilkinson's solo album--all fine recordings, but nothing that could be considered a first choice. And of course there are many omissions, most notably the shows of Stephen Sondheim (a longtime RCA artist, even!). A follow-up, The Only Other Broadway CD You'll Ever Need, proved what everyone expected--the original's title was indeed an impossible dream. But it got your attention, didn't it? --David Horiuchi« less

Well...maybe not the 'only' Broadway CD you'll ever need, LOL but it has the greats on it!
CD Reviews
I LUV this CD

"This CD (and her new one THE ONLY OTHER BROADWAY CD YOU'LL EVER NEED) contains some of the the greatest hits of the broadway musicals, from the very beguinning to this years smash hits. If you want a great collection of songs, this collection is for you. The recordings are all very good and nothing is fake. You won't be sorry for buying this CD! I knew very little of the songs when I got it, and now I know them all by heart! Enjoy!"
Fantastic!

"This CD definitely represents the best of Broadway. I have listened to this CD so many times and have enjoyed it tremendously each and every time. It also introduced me to two musicals I hadn't had the opportunity to hear yet--Titanic and Ragtime. The two songs chosen for this CD were so incredibly good that I immediately bought those musicals in full. This is the third time I have had to buy this CD because my family members keep taking mine. Definitely get this. You won't regret it."
A Good Promotion for RCA Victor

"This CD may not be the only Broadway CD you'll ever need because it leaves out songs from many high profile and popular musicals, but it does have a wide variety from what RCA Victor produced. It is a nice CD with some sound choices of music ... I enjoy listening to it."
Poor choice of recent musical selections

"While this CD represents a wide variety of musical styles and performances, the inclusion of works from Titanic and Ragtime alongside Oklahoma and Cabaret gives me pause. Works from recent shows such as Rent, Phantom, Les Mis, or even Cats are far more deserving of inclusion. Tinanic and Ragtime will not withstand the test of time of the other included works."
A treat for fans of Broadway music.

"If you are a fan of Broadway music and musicals, you will truly enjoy this CD. It contains a smattering of music--20 cuts from 20 different shows--and you know every one of them. Although I might have chosen some different numbers from other shows, no CD can contain the best of every show. But I highly recommend this if you enjoy the music of Broadway."
