CD Reviews

TRINI LOPEZ( recorded live) AT PJ'S
L. Dequesada | JAMAICA,, NY United States | 09/30/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In my opinion this was Trini Lopez most popular album of his entire career. Recorded live in 1962 during one of Trini's memorable performances at PJs in Texas, and released by Frank Sinatra's "Reprise" label, this CD a must have for all Trini Lopez and rock music (with tex-mex music influence) fans. In my opinion, the crown jewels of this recorded live performance are definitely the old time hit classics "America" and "If I Had a Hammer". This album includes its original Lp cover and also offers memorable bonus tracks which makes its purchase mandatory for all those of us who remember listening and dancing to it when it was released during 1963 and long after that. Its a wonderful thing that those who think likewise released it on CD format therefore making it possible for us to keep enjoying it today."
TRINI AT PJ'S STANDS THE TEST OF TIME

"All the tracks on this CD stand the test of time.

They bring back the simplier times of the 60's and let us know how bad the music is today.

This CD brings back the good music."

"Trini Lopez at PJ's is in my music collection both on vinyl and on CD; and I don't regret the extra purchase of this on CD one bit. The quality of the sound is truly excellent on this CD; and the artwork is great. As usual, Trini Lopez put his own stamp on these songs with his incredible sense of timing; and his exceptional interpretations of anything he sings make them all electric. Great!

"A-Me-Ri-Ca" is a number that starts off the album with Trini Lopez squarely front and center! This show tune from West Side Story really gets the royal treatment from Trini and those fine musicians although wisely they never steal the show away from Trini. "A-Me-Ri-Ca" a very spirited and you can tell the crowd really likes this--what a rapport Trini has with his audience! In addition, "If I Had A Hammer" is a folk song that few Latin artists could ever do any better than Trini does it here; Trini delivers this very passionately and it's all very pretty. "If I Had A Hammer" is easily a major highlight of this album; and that guitar work enhances the ballad nicely.

"Bye Bye Blackbird" was always one of my very favorite songs from this era; it just plain sounds terrific and even somewhat romantic in its own way. "Bye Bye Blackbird" has Trini getting the audience to join in; and they're clearly having the time of their lives! The musical arrangement makes good use of the guitars; and the percussion makes the music even better. "Cielito Lindo (Pretty Sky)" shines bright when Trini sings it; and when the crowd comes in for the chorus it's a real party! Trini sings this song with panache and I could never tire of hearing Trini Lopez performing "Cielito Lindo (Pretty Sky)." The guitars work wonders for "Cielito Lindo (Pretty Sky)," too.

"This Land Is Your Land" continues the party atmosphere and Trini delivers this wonderfully. He really can sing folk songs very well. The slightly Latin flavor doesn't interfere with this song one bit; in fact it enhances it! "What'd I Say" would surely make Ray Charles proud; and "La Bamba" is simply flawless. There's also a medley with "Gotta Travel On;" Trini handles this masterfully and he never lets go of a superfluous note. The guitars and percussion really stand out on this tune.

"Down By The Riverside" is another timeless classic with a very catchy melody; and listen for Trini Lopez to outdo even himself on "Marianne." "Marianne" is both catchy and very pretty; Trini performs this well without ever skipping a beat. "When the Saints Go Marching In" sparkles just as bright as any other classic tune ever could in Trini's capable hands; and "Volare" is a very spirited song that gets a fine interpretation by Trini, the musicians and even the chorus in the crowd! The CD ends strong with Trini Lopez performing "Unchain My Heart;" "Unchain My Heart" lacks nothing--it's all THAT good and it leaves me wanting much, much more.

Trini Lopez fans will find this album to be an absolute must-have for their collections; Trini does these numbers up right and his excellent rapport with the crowd amazes me. This CD is also a good place to start if you are just discovering the great talent of Trini Lopez.
