Product Description
Chant and polyphony from the 12th-century manuscript Codex Calixtinus along with new music written specially for The Rose Ensemble by Minnesota composers Victor Zupanc and J. David Moore. Truly some of the most virtuosic medieval vocal music ever written and some of the most beautiful music The Rose Ensemble has ever commissioned.

CD Reviews

Exquisite! "Sweet sounds of music befitting this feast must

"Beautiful.

At the time that this CD was recorded, the Rose Ensemble was comprised of only eight singers, plus a non-singing string player and a non-singing composer-in-residence who played percussion on this CD. Eight voices only. Eight angelic voices.

This is not a safe, dry recording of the Codex Calixtinus. This is a daring and joyous affair, even in its most delicate moments. It takes its hostages, shivers and teary eyes, but it approaches brightly rather than darkly, and throws you a wink and a smile afterward.

I don't want to write a too-long review. I will just say that this is a CD that I bought, in 2008, after having heard the Rose Ensemble perform much of this material in the very chapel in Saint Paul, Minnesota in which this CD was recorded in 2002, and it's one of those CD's that instantly staked a place in my life to the point where it feels like something that was meant to be here all the time. Something that I had forgotten that I had lost found its way back to me.

Yes, it's possible to find a CD of medieval choral music that costs two or three bucks less. But I recommend that you buy this one instead."
