"I purchased this CD in a little Scandanavian import shop several years ago. I was just walking around browsing, not looking for anything in particular until I became fascinated by the sound of an incredibly beautiful female voice coming through the speakers of the store sound system, I went to the counter and asked, "Who is that?" That was my introduction to Sissel Kyrkjebo, the beautiful Norwegian singer whos' amazing voice is one of the best keep secrets in Europe.



'Innerst I Sjelen' contains -12 tracks- all sung in Norwegian, so I don't know what she's saying. But, with a voice this delightful who cares."

Sissel's first collection of Scandinavian folk music

"Innerst I Sjelen from 1994 is the first of Sissel's albums that consists predominantly of traditional Scandinavian folk music. It is exquisitely beautiful and my favorite among her releases. Many of the songs have a religious bent and the music reflects it in their gentle hymn-like nature. I love almost every piece here but standouts include "Tidin Rennur" (Time is Flowing), "Som Fagre Blomen" (Like the Fairest Flower), "Bred Dina Vida Vingar" (Spread Your Wide Wings) and of course the title track, "Innerst I Sjelen" (Deepest In The Soul). "Se Ilden Lyse" (See the Fiery Light) is the Norwegian version of the official theme song of the 1994 Winter Olympics, "Fire In Your Heart", which she sings here with Placido Domingo. "Alma Redemtoris Mater" (Loving Mother of the Redeemer) is a Marian antiphon dating back almost a thousand years to the 11th Century but Sissel's version, even with its modern drumbeat, is the one I prefer over other more traditional settings (usually with unaccompanied male chorus). As a previous reviewer has said, these songs come from all across the Nordic lands and we get to hear Sissel singing in Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish. Beautifully recorded, this is a delight to listen to.



Note: This was just $20 a few weeks ago. It seems Amazon has upped the price recently. You might want to wait till it drops again to something more reasonable."

"I purchased the audio tape of this CD in a Scandinavian boutique here in Michigan. Sissel Kyrkjeb? (I dare you to pronounce her last name -- the k's here are like German ch in ich, the ? is like the German ?, and the y is a lip-rounded i) sang at both the opening and closing of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer (my tape includes that at the end), her glorious voice already recognized over a decade ago. I found the lyrics to Innerst i sjelen (Innermost in the soul) at http://www.sissel.cc/. Not all are in Norwegian. #5 Alma Redemtoris is in Latin, #6 Som fagre blomen and #11 Bred dina vida vingar are in Swedish, #8 I skovens dybe stille ro is in Danish, and #10 Tidin rennur is in Icelandic. #12 Fire in Your Heart is a duet in English with Placido Domingo. The rest are Norwegian, and one, #9 Stolt Margjit, is a famous folk ballad in dialect."
