CD Reviews

Electrifying!

"Almost every jazz and pop singer has sung "Cry Me a River" and I have already listened to a few dozen versions of it including both vocals and instrumentals. Whose vocal version is the best? It's hard to say until I listened to Shirley Bassey's version in this album. Her "Cry Me a River" is simply electrifying. The recording is also very well remastered. Highly recommended. However, the CD is a bit short or else it will have got 5 stars."
FABULOUS!

"An album of fabulous vocalizing on fabulous songs! Shirley Bassey certainly put her tremendous talents into this. She held back a bit which will appeal to the non-belting fans out there. The voice is still majestic & full ranged rivaling anything by Jane Morgan! The songs are chestnuts that one never gets tired of hearing. Her CRY ME A RIVER surpasses Julie London & Barbra Streisand. It's forcful without being melodramatic. I usually preferred Shirley doing newer material but with her UA album, YESTERDAYS, & this one for MGM, Bassey kept up with her contemporaries who relied on the American Songbook for their repertoire. She had a haunting quality, [I'VE NEVER BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE, & I'LL REMEMBER APRIL] that was sometime lacking in her other records. My favorite is NO ONE EVER TELLS YOU in which she did tear loose a bit. I guess Shirley Bassey had to show off when she was in her prime. Still, every track is worth owning. Shirley Bassey was one of those victims of the rock craze that eventually took over pop music. Because of that, Shirley never achieved the popularity she so richly deserved. Oh yes, the sound quality is better with this Swedih import cd than with the lp. Her voice sounds richer."

"The title definitely describes what this cd is!!! to bad it's out of print! The voice is young, strong and that dramatic flare is there!! the songs she recorded for this lp at the time had been covered by many vocalists already, but what makes this so good are the arrangements!! and this cd was wonderfully remastered!! if you can find a copy get it!"
