The Beauty of Madness
11/04/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The fact that many people recognize Robert Schumann as being the composer who lost his mind has always seemed a shame. Whatever the problems within his mind, the composer's soul is what will remain with any musician who encounters his music. Schumann couldn't have asked for a better musician to present his work than Andreas Schmidt. Truly Schmidt is the best baritone of his generation, yet his name is not as well known as some of his peers. A student of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Schmidt has all the intimacy and storytelling ability of his teacher, with an added depth in the low end of his range and a knack for raising the hair on the back of the neck in the high end. While one can sit back and listen to Dieskau with a glass of wine, one remains on the edge of the seat when listening to Schmidt. Highlights of this cd include the impassioned Ich Grolle Nicht, and the vigorous Es treibt mich hin. Schmidt takes each song and brings out its individuality, making this an album one can put on repeat and listen to over and over again-if you plan on spending a night in intense concentration and musical bliss."
A beautiful voice takes you only so far

"Andreas Schmidt can lay claim to possibly the most sheerly beautiful baritone in Germany since the retirement of his teacher, Fischer-Dieskau. It's deeper and richer by far. He has a commanding stage presence in opera and is devoted to the Lieder repertoire. The trouble is that Schmidt is among the most unimaginative of singers, all too willing to let gorgeous tone do all the work. When you are up against two of Schumann's masterpieces, the Liederkreiis Op. 24 based on poems of Heine, and the immortal Dichterliebe, competiiton is fierce. Tenderness, heroism, and the ability to tell a story are paramount. Other current baritones have risen to the challenge magnificently -- Thomas Quasthoff, Bryn Terfel, and Thomas Hampson come to mind -- so Schmidt's generalized singing doesn't quite cut it.

However, if you aren't an aficianado and want a recital of great songs in beautiful sound with a fine accompanist, Rudolf Jansen, partnering a justly famous singer, this CD fits the bill."
