"In most recordings, Hampson displays a beautiful voice governed by an intelligent mind and an open heart. Unfortunately, his Winter Journey feels more like a Spring Stroll; it lacks the emotional distress both poet & composer invested in this supreme song cycle. I respectfully suggest you pass on his Winterreise. Make the Journey instead with Hermann Prey, Fischer-Dieskau, or Jon Vickers (who sings many of the songs in baritone keys). This song cycle is one of the greatest works of art; don't compromise your experience with this particular Hampson recording."
