2009 collection. A product of the era of Ella and Billie Holiday, the talented and ill-fated Savannah Churchill held her own with her peers, both vocally and visually. Evolving from Swing and R&B towards Doo-Wop Pop, the beautiful, adaptable Savannah sang her way to the top, continuing to please both the Jazz cognoscenti and more generalized society audiences. Had an unfortunate accident not truncated her career, she would surely have won `immortality' much sooner, although her more recent posthumous reappraisal as `Mistress of Cool' has now concretized her R&B cult status. Considering her wide popularity in her lifetime her discography appears sparse (and that in a repertoire that was largely ephemeral), although she emerges comfortably in a range of guises: whether Blues stylist or middle-of-the-roader, she delivers all with ample assurance, clarity and personality. 26 tracks.
