"Sammy Davis, Jr only recorded for Capitol Records for one year, 1949. During that year, he recorded 20 sides, all with a modest 5-10 piece studio jazz band led by Dave Cavanaugh. All of those sides are represented on this Capitol Collector's Series collection.
The majority of the tracks are swingers, while the rest are ballads. Most are done fairly light-hearted, with Sammy just singing with his cool style, several with him scatting away. There are even a couple tracks where Sammy sings in several different styles, impersonating Nat Cole, Charles Brown, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, and more...all within a single song!
If you want to hear Sammy's earliest sides, with some light jazzy flair before he became the Vegas showman, you need this disc. It is the ONLY place you can get these precious Capitol sides.
