This album features 16th-century English (Tudor) and 18th-century Scottish material - carols, court dances, songs, instrumentals, children's singing games, Scottish airs and pipe tunes. The latest Revel's CD was made especially for the holidays, with music taken from two separate Christmas Revels holiday stage productions, including popular songs, carols, and rarely recorded material.
"This recording is just what I would expect, particularly after looking at the list of material. I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was expecting, but I cannot reconcile the description of somber with the music on this disc. I love the Revels recordings, even with their flaws - the singing can be uneven at times - because it puts me in the mindset of being at a celebration in someone's home, with all present participating. There are sprightly tunes and songs of reflection appropriate to the ending of the year. There are kids' songs and traditional tunes not related to the holidays in and amongst the other material. You'd hear this kind of range at a ceilidh, where those present take turns doing their favorite party pieces."
