LUCY SINGS!
Bluebird | USA | 12/12/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a dynamite compilation CD of duets from MGM films. The highlight for me is "Breezin' Along With the Breeze," featuring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in rich and full TRUE STEREO from the film THE LONG, LONG TRAILER (1954). For the films BEST FOOT FORWARD and DUBARRY WAS A LADY (both 1943-MGM) Lucy's singing was supplied by a voice double. Here she does her own vocal and we get a chance to hear her sing in a serious manner, rather than the comedic screeching she did so wonderfully on "I Love Lucy." Other highlights are "Imagine" from 1954's very strange ATHENA, "I Know That You Know" from 1954's HIT THE DECK, and "How Do You Like Your Eggs in the Morning?" from 1951's RICH YOUNG AND PRETTY. In "Ain't Nature Grand" we get to hear Esther Williams' real singing voice (she was sometimes dubbed, sometimes not). Outtakes include the "One Kiss" lead-in to "Lover Come Back to Me" from 1954's DEEP IN MY HEART and "They Say It's Wonderful" from the aborted Judy Garland version of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. One hopes that the films represented here will one day see full soundtrack treatments. Take note that there is an error in the song listings on the back of the CD and in the booklet - Track 3 is actually "I Know That You Know" and track 10 is "Ain't Nature Grand.""
