"Rod McKuen is more well known as a poet/songwriter than an actual singer/performer but his versions of his songs are often the best. This is the fourth collection of Rod's best known works that Warner Bros. released in the late 60s/early 70s and a lot of his best loved songs/poems are included, like "If You Go Away", "Sleep Warm", "Gifts From The Sea" and "The Lonely Things".
My favorite track here was not written by McKuen but by Australian singer/songwriter Doug Ashdown. I was not familiar with Ashdown until I heard Rod's version of "Winter In America". Recorded in the early 80s, it's one of the best things McKuen ever put his voice to. Although not a Christmas song by any means, it's a part of my essential Christmas listening every year. I listen to it regularly from November to February year after year and never tire of it."
Loneliness never sounded so good!
