CD Reviews

Another Compiltation
Robert Mcdonald | West Hollywood, CA United States | 12/03/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am the type of fan who would rather these record companies just get it over with and release the entire catalogue of an artist intact, than flood the market with a zillion greatest hits packages, best of, or compilations coming out of the proverbial wazoo. Of the 21

Lp's Mr. Goulet recorded for Columbia, 10 have been issued somewhere or other on CD and the real fans of this stunning voice will buy these other configuations hoping to find tracks from the other 11.

On this British import, most of it is from CD's already out. This 3 disc set generously features something like 21 cuts per disc. The real treasure for me,

however,on this CD set were the 10 of the 11 cuts that make up his late 60's recording, "Hollywood Mon Amour"(among his most inspired vocals) , and 5 or 6 cuts from "The Wonderful World of Love" which have not been available before. There is also a rare studio/commercial/mono rendition of "If ever I would leave you".

The sound is all in all, pretty good, and the graphics feature no photo of the star, but a 60's look-kind of multi-colored logo.

Well, it was the decade he did most of his recording in.

If you have no Goulet recordings in your collection on either Lp, or CD, it's a great collection of songs, arrangements, and vocals. and place to start.

And if you do, for the price, it was worth it (to me) for the things that are not available on CD."
A wonderful showcase for a great voice

"Though these three CDs will miss a favorite song or two for every Goulet fan (for me it is "No Moon at All"), it is nevertheless an excellent overview of his career in the 1960s, with a mix from his repertoire of Broadway shows and popular ballads.

Goulet achieved stardom when he landed the coveted part of Lancelot in the 1960 Broadway production of "Camelot", alongside Richard Burton and Julie Andrews, and this compilation begins with his signature song from that Lerner and Loewe show, "If Ever I Would Leave You". Another terrific show that Goulet sings from is "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever", with the title track, and a zestful interpretation of "Come Back to Me" that is one of the best tracks in the collection.

Among the arranger/conductors on these tracks we get some of the best: Don Costa, Glenn Osser, Sid Ramin, Ralph Burns, and more. The musicianship is top notch, and overall sound very good.

One of the aspects of Goulet's singing that I appreciate (and lyricists must love) is his careful attention to the words, with his unique phrasing and clear enunciation; listen to him sing a much recorded song like "Sunrise, Sunset" for instance, and it is like hearing it for the first time, with the verses taking on a deeper meaning.

Disc One highlights: The exquisite interpretation of "Autumn Leaves", which is sung in French, and the lush, ultra-romantic "Take Me in Your Arms", and a simply gorgeous "Call Me Irresponsible".

Many of the tracks on this disc are available on the "16 Most Requested Songs" CD, which is a fabulous compilation for those that want the best of Goulet on a single disc.

Total playing time for # 1 is 58'10.

Disc Two highlights: The tenderness and beauty of "The Nearness of You" and "I'm a Fool to Want You", and "Just Say I Love Her", which is sung partially in Italian. The final track, the Mercer/Arlen "Out of this World", is fantastic.

Total playing time for # 2 is 53'35.

Disc Three highlights: A phenomenal "In the Still of the Night", sung in an almost prayerful manner, reminiscent of a piece like "Ave Maria", and from one of my favorite films, "The Fall of the Roman Empire", a monumental Dimitri Tiomkin melody in "The Fall of Love". Irving Berlin's "They Say it's Wonderful" is a lovely duet with Doris Day.

Total playing time for # 3 is 64'25.

This set comes in a box with 3 individual jewel cases, and each case comes with a simple foldout with a song list only; it's a must for Goulet fans, with every track a marvelous example of his artistry and rich baritone voice.

Goulet Madness

"The album is wonderful, spanning many years of old records, but out of 60 songs, 15 were already on the last 36 song CD, so many are repeats and of course all the other cd's throughout the years.

Where are the songs from CAMELOT, SOUTH PACIFIC AND MAN OF LA MANCHA, THAT HE WAS SO POWERFUL IN?
