CD Reviews

More great songs from a brilliant group

(5 out of 5 stars)

"With all the really famous songs being on the first volume Best of the Platters, this compilation is inevitably weaker. If the original intention had been to release two volumes, it is reasonable to assume that the big hits would have been split between them. I am therefore assuming that this compilation was released because of the sales generated by the original volume.

Dedicated Platters fan know that the truly definitive compilation is the 50-track The Magic Touch: An Anthology (2CD), which is still in print. Even though this collection avoids all the obvious tracks, 17 of the 18 tracks here are included in that double CD, the exception being a cover of Apple blossom time. Still, this collection is at a nice price, especially if you've already got the first volume.

The Ink Spots (the original singers of Whispering grass, which song became a British number one for Don Estelle and Windsor Davis in the seventies) were a major influence on the Platters. Two covers of Ink Spots songs (If I didn't care, To each his own) are included here. Both became American hits for the Platters. In fact, their most famous Ink Spots cover is My prayer, which can be found on the original volume.

The Platters had so many American hits that, even though the two volumes between them contain 36 tracks, there are very few non-hits among the tracks here, albeit many of them were only minor hits.

Most people who have bought Best of the Platters will be content with that (as I was for a long time) but some will want more (as I eventiually did) and this collection gives them an opportunity to buy more without duplicating what they already own."
