Synopsis

People who know Phil Coulter primarily for his orchestral arrangements of traditional Irish melodies on recordings such as Classic Tranquility and Celtic Tranquility may be surprised to discover he is also a songwriter of rare ability. The Songs I Love So Well is a collection of some of his personal favorites including "My Boy," which he wrote for Richard Harris's 1973 follow-up to MacArthur Park, and "Scorn Not His Simplicity," a moving song written for his son who was born with Down's syndrome. Also included is the duet with Ronan Keating, "The Town I Love So Well," which was voted one of the best songs of the last millennium in a poll in Ireland. On most of the tracks Coulter eschews his trademark lush instrumental sound in favor of stripped-down, intimate arrangements that are well suited to his limited vocal range. By emphasizing the meaning of the words over the prettiness of the melodies (and Coulter has composed some lovely tunes here), he delivers more powerful versions of these songs than a more "accomplished" singer might have done. But then most songwriters, even if they aren't the best singers around, give the best performances of their own songs. --Michael Simmons

An Album Like No Other of Phil Coulter's
Gabrielle Rhodes | Illinois - U.S.A. | 11/03/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a great recording by Phil Coulter, very different from his other work in that it is a vocal album. I purchased it as an opportunity to hear songs I was unfamiliar with in his songbook by the same name. I thought it may be a compilation of other artists who had recorded his songs, but was thrilled that with the exception of Ronan Keating singing with him on "The Town I Loved So Well," it was all Phil. The title of the album is confirmed by the emotion in the vocals. All songs were written by Phil but for "The Man From God Knows Where," a recitation which is especially listenable. I would not necessarily recommend this as an introduction to Phil Coulter's music since it is so different from his other albums, but for those who like his vocals on other albums, it is a must!"
