CD Reviews

Petula Clark at her best

"It's a real treat to have this material on CD at long last. Well done to Zone Records for doing that. This is music recorded by Petula during the late 70s while she was contracted to CBS and includes two albums and attendant singles. The first album "Je reviens" (I'm coming back) marks a return to recording after a family break. It contains some superb songs and Petula is singing perhaps better than ever before. She sounds happy to be back. The second cd contains the makings of an album which she recorded, but which was not released, and some amazing songs have been lying in a vault somewhere for 25 years. French versions of Andrew Gold's "Poor Lonesome Playboy", and Olivia Newton-John's "Sam" are notable, but for me the beautiful "Le Soleil, ca Vient des Amis", the poignant "Il Joue du Piano" and the dramatic " La Fin", are the highlights of this album. Included are her singles of the time "La Chanson d'Evita" (Don't Cry for me Argentina), which is, strangely, far better in French, the rocking "Leve-toi Petula", and the funny "55 Millions de Gaulois", which pokes fun at the almost everyone, without causing offence. The album comes with complete sleeve notes in English or French written by Petula Clark experts Tony Heester and David Hadzis. It's an all-round superb package for all Petula Clark fans, and comes highly recommended.
