(5 out of 5 stars)
"Peggy Lee Sings The Standards is a wonderful CD of Peggy Lee singing her heart out and her voice is in excellent form. The sound quality is great and the artwork is very pretty.
"Cheek To Cheek" starts the CD with Peggy singing this fine Irving Berlin tune; she sounds great and the big band style arrangement perfectly complements her vocals. "Fly Me To The Moon" features some rarely hear opening lines; and when Peggy goes into the song this number really takes flight! Peggy sings "Fly Me To The Moon" so sweetly that if you're not touched by this you really ought to check your pulse!
Listen also for "I Could Have Danced All Night;" this tune from My Fair Lady has a fine Latin flavor to it and Peggy never misses a beat! Peggy delivers this song with panache and the brass are used to great advantage. "The Old Devil Moon" shines like gold when Peggy delivers this flawlessly; and I really like "The Folks Who Live On The Hill." This song is quite romantic and the strings are lovely.
"Just For A Thrill" has a beautiful melody and when Peggy sings this it sounds new and fresh; Peggy's voice is truly a finely tuned instrument. "L-O-V-E" is a song made famous by the great Nat King Cole. Peggy sings "L-O-V-E" with all her might and she really performs "L-O-V-E" to perfection--and beyond! "Smile," a song written partly by Charlie Chaplin, also gets a `60s type of Latin treatment that works wonders for this ballad. "As Time Goes By" gets the royal treatment from Peggy who never sings a superfluous note on "As Time Goes By."
"Unforgettable" is very pretty; Nat King Cole surely would have enjoyed Peggy's rendition of one of his signature songs. "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" is equally beautiful and Peggy handles this effortlessly. The drums and percussion enhance the melody of "I Left My Heart In San Francisco."
The album ends with Peggy performing "Bridge Over Troubled Water." This tune by Simon and Garfunkel features Peggy squarely front and center and she delivers this with great sensitivity and heartfelt passion. Great!
This CD is a must have for fans of Peggy Lee. People who enjoy classic pop vocals will certainly love this album as well.
