Un Disco Buonissimo

"Paolo Conte is one of the more interesting Italian popular singer-songwriters. Conte's voice is unique - one might compare him to Tom Waits, in that his voice is rough and his lyrics are not easily explained (even in Italian), though less theatrical. While definitely modern, his music is rooted in the European cabaret tradition, with a jazz influence The writing, arranging and production on this album are outstanding. Many Italian pop artists surround great vocals with the cheap synthesizers. Conte doesn't - he uses real horns, piano and accordion. A particular highlight is the French vocals on "Quadrille". I've had this disc for maybe 5 years, and I still enjoy listening to it."
INTROSPECTION AND CARNIVAL

"The music of Paolo Conte improves by aging,as a good bottle of barolo does. His latest work is mature, often humourous, carnivalesque, dionysiac. Not only jazz or latino sounds, even waltz, pop, new-age echoes, all of that makes you feel drunk and lost in the mist of the Po valley by night."
