CD Reviews

Exquisite.

"This is the QUINTESSENTIAL Nnenna Freelom CD.

Nnenna delivers an exquisite collection of songs that alternates between Soul and Smooth Jazz.

She combines a smooth alto voice with a brash, almost aggressive, style of phrasing

"Better Than Everything" shows her musical class particularly on cuts like "I Say A Little Prayer", "Body And Soul" and "Better Than Everything".

I heard one track on a local jazz radio station, I was delighted.

I hunted Nnenna down on Amazon and found this terrific album, which has just come out.

It is a MUST have CD.

It's never boring, it is great music to have playing in the background when you are trying to concentrate."

"I've always wondered what Jazz songstress Nnenna Freelon's music sounded like, especially as she shares her first name with my wonderful cousin. A friend of mine gave this CD to me, and it is apparently a collection of some of her best.

I love the big band Jazz sound with big bass, horns, and skatting a-plenty. Opening cut "Better than anything" (in which she declares "Better than four sets of Dizzie, Count Basie's band... being on Oprah or Letterman, winning the lottery, better than anything than being in love"), "Nature boy", and the Latin-tinged "I won't dance" are fine examples of this.

Her version of "Straighten up and fly right" is so different, just male acapella vocals (Gospel group take 6) and fingersnaps accompany her vocals. Interesting and nice. "I say a little prayer" is a conga-fest, while "The tears of a clown" (performed live) is a tender spare piano ballad.

Closing is the piano "Balm in Gilead", a gospel song given the Jazz treatment. I love the soulful vocal crescendo towards the end. Soothing as a balm.

Lovely! I'll be on the look out for more from Ms Freelon."

"Great setlist. Encyclopedic musical tour de force by a Diva. Maybe her best album.

I'm a fan. And you?"
