"I have both Russell and Williams.
I don't see why some people find one better than the other.
Both are amazing; they are just different.
If you like a musically and technically sophisticated performance, Williams may suit you better. If you believe music should be something romantic and beautiful, you should definitely go for Russell. Besides, they contain many different songs.
If you are a guitar enthusiast, you should have both. They are worth the money!!!"
Almost Paraguayan

"A wonderful recording of unsurpassed music by a great guitarist! I particularly enjoyed the fluidity, clarity and precision of Russell's playing. Another plus: four of the pieces I haven't found on other recordings dedicated to Barrios --Vals de Primavera, Vals Tropical, Fabiniana, and A Mi Madre. So why only four stars (the same as the Williams disc)? It left me feeling "almost." Almost convincing; almost Paraguayan; almost right. One advantage in living in Paraguay is being nearly immersed in Barrios' music. The guitar program recognized by the Ministry of Culture is top-heavy with Barrios from year three on, to the detriment of a balanced repertoire. Everyone plays Barrios all the time. My favorite Barrios CDs are by the two top Paraguayan guitarists: Berta Rojas, Intimate Barrios (Dorian Recordings), and Luz Maria Bobadilla, Homenaje a Agustin Barrios Mangore (Banco Union del Paraguay). Are Berta and Luz Maria as good as Williams and Russell? No. But they have grown up surrounded by the rhythms and harmonies that first flowed through Barrios' head and heart. They feel and interpret the part of Barrios' work that is distinctively Paraguayan (only part of his work draws heavily on that background) better than any other guitarist I've heard. With them, Barrios sings in a way that is missing in either Russell or Williams. BTW, try comparing Berta Rojas's recording of Verano Porteño with that of Williams. From the soybean fields of eastern Paraguay, (stevehaines@pobox.com)"

"I had been looking for an all-Barrios CD for a long time then I found this one by David Russell. He's an excellent guitarist and interpreter of Barrios music. Julia Florida rules!"

"Having not yet listened to Williams' all-Barrios CD, I have to say that this is the best recording of Barrios I have heard. Russell plays with grace and beauty, and, above all, feeling. Favorite track: Las Abejas."

"Mr. Russell's performance of works by Augustin Barrios Mangore is perfect. Very well done. Expert interpretation. Warm tone, joyous recording."
