CD Reviews

It's from Les Arts Florissants, it's got to be good!

"I've come to rely on William Christie's talent and taste for my baroque music selections. His soloists are always the best. In addition to Il Combattimento, this CD contains assorted madrigals sung to perfection. A special praise goes to two double-tenor duets "Mentre vaga angioletta" and "Zefiro torna," combining the distinctive voices of Fouchencourt and Padmore to achieve a harmony that cannot be rivaled. If you find a better male duet, call me."

"The treat for me on this CD is the opening twenty minutes given to wonderful Nicolas Rivenq as the narrator of Tancredi & Clorinda. A vivid and vulnerable baritone, he warms the tale with a forthright sexuality that seems just right and sets the tone for the rest of the recording. William Christie's Monteverdi is lively, immediate, intimate and precise - ear candy of the first order unless you insist on baroque without vibrato - I think Christie leaves that to the singers."
