In addition to Il Combattimento, this CD contains assorted madrigals sung to perfection. A special praise goes to two double-tenor duets "Mentre vaga angioletta" and "Zefiro torna," combining the distinctive voices of Fouchencourt and Padmore to achieve a harmony that cannot be rivaled. If you find a better male duet, call me."

"The treat for me on this CD is the opening twenty minutes given to wonderful Nicolas Rivenq as the narrator of Tancredi & Clorinda. A vivid and vulnerable baritone, he warms the tale with a forthright sexuality that seems just right and sets the tone for the rest of the recording. William Christie's Monteverdi is lively, immediate, intimate and precise - ear candy of the first order unless you insist on baroque without vibrato - I think Christie leaves that to the singers."
