"Quadromania's ode to Mildred Bailey gives us four CDs chock full of her whopping talent. Mildred's voice was always as clear as a bell and this CD proves why she was so popular in her times.
The first CD has a number of highlights. "When Day Is Done" has an excellent jazzy interpretation; and Mildred performs "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" with all the style of the master that she was. Moreover, "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" gets all of Mildred's uniquely beautiful vocal abilities; she makes this jazzy little number shine! "St. Louis Blues" features Mildred's vocals squarely in the spotlight where they belong; and Mildred never sounded better!
The second CD has a great version of "There'll Be Some Changes Made" that was sung so often by the great Sophie Tucker. Mildred sings this beautifully as a meaningful ballad more than the sassy way Tucker sang it. "I'm Nobody's Baby" sounds so great when Mildred performs this adorable number with the upbeat flavor that belies the sadness of the lyrics. Great! "Georgia On My Mind" sports a chorus to bolster Mildred's performance and I really like this effect. Mildred also sings a rarely heard opening verse of "Georgia On My Mind."
As for the third CD, there's a lot to hear and enjoy. "Lover, Come Back To Me" sounds so good when Mildred delivers it flawlessly; and the arrangement for piano impresses me a lot. "Rockin' Chair" opens with a fine piano solo; and Mildred comes in to perform this number with all her heart and soul. "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" gets the royal treatment from Mildred as she bats this one clear out of the ballpark! I love it!
The fourth album boasts a lot, too. "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" opens the CD with a sweet rendition of this ballad by Mildred who never misses a beat. Wow, how she sings this with all her heart! I really like "Can't Help Lovin' That Man Of Mine." "All Of Me" starts with a huge musical flourish highlighting the strings; and Mildred sings this sweet as she swings ever so slowly to inject a very romantic effect into this number. The CD ends with a second version of Mildred delivering "Lover, Come Back To Me" as a very jazzy, almost upbeat tune that is infectiously catchy, too.
The liner notes give us the song credits and recording dates; but that's about it. I would have liked an essay but that's a minor disappointment.
Overall, if you like classic pop vocals from the first half of the twentieth century, this four CD set was made for you. Mildred Bailey's fans won't want to skip this one, either.
Thank you, Mildred! We will never forget you!

"Having been a big fan of Mildred Bailey for several years. I wanted more to add to my limited collection of her recordings. This was a good selection. Hard to believe that she is so unknown these days. A beautiful, jazz and blues influenced voice, with fine band accompaniment, great choice of songs. A great choice for any fan of early jazz."
