Album DescriptionProduced by Early Music expert Ton Koopman, this unique recording of Schubert?s vocal masterpiece uniquely offers the keyboard accompaniment on a historic fortepiano of Schubert?s time, giving this performance a unique intimacy. Schubert?s 24-song cycle Winter Journey is a setting of melancholy and deeply moving poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is generally considered the summit of the art of this greatest composer of Lieder. The German bass-baritone Klaus Mertens is best known for his work with Early Music specialists and has been heard on more than 120 recordings, including the monumental complete Bach Cantatas series on Challenge Classics. Klaus Mertens is the first and the only singer to have sung all of Bach?s vocal works for a complete CD recording series, and also in concerts. Mertens also devotes himself equally successfully to singing Lieder from early to modern times. His concert repertoire covers a great range, from Monteverdi to contemporary composers,! including some that were especially written for him. Fortepianist Tini Mathot also boasts a successful international concert and recording career. The wife of Ton Koopman, she serves as recording director for the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir.
