"This CD is a masterpiece, a wonderful piece of art! Mischa Maisky is one of the best cello players in the world and also Sergio Tiempo is magnificent. The music is simply marvellous.
Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy is one of my favourite composers (alongside with Mozart, Beethoven and Bach). He perfectly describes the typical german "romantic feelings" and listening to this CD to me, pictures of the forest emerge in front of my eyes or even paitings like those by caspar david friedrich (o. k., I am german... ;-))).
The "7 songs without words" have originally a text that is to be sung. On this CD, Mr. Maiskys wonderful Cello takes the singer's part. You dream away... My favourite song of these is "Auf den Flügeln des Gesanges" ("On the wings of song") with lyrics written by the great Heinrich Heine. (It's in his gorgeous "Books of Songs"). It is about a boy that wants to take his sweetheart away to paradise - on the wings of song. If you like to listen to at least one track, I strongly recommend this one to you. [You can listen to samples on www.amazon.de.]
I would give it 50 stars, if this was possible."

"Until I heard this recording of some music by Mendelssohn that is performed on the cello with piano accompaniment. Cellist, Mischa Maisky was not part of my list of "Favorite Cellists" (I really doubt that concerned him much) Now, he is certainly a favorite! What a delightful recording this is consisting of Felix Mendelssohn's two (2) Cello Sonatas along with seven (7) "songs without words" and the "Variations Concertantes". I especially enjoyed hearing the first sonata (not heard too often--what a pity) and the very beautiful "Songs without words". To me, Mendelssohn's "Songs without words" do yield themselves so very well to this format (cello accompanied by piano). Anyway, Mischa Maisky on cello and Sergio Tiempo (a Martha Argerich protégé)on the piano play this entire recording marvelously with gorgeous tone and a keen sense of rhythm. I just love this recording and listen to it often!"
Excellent musicanship and sound

"The playing by Maisky and Tiempo is first rate, as is the sound quality.
I gave the CD 5 stars because of this, but I actually don't enjoy this CD as much as the interpretations done by Isserlis and Tan, for example.
To me, Maisky is too aggressive in these pieces. I prefer the playing of Isserlis who is more lyrical and I believe brings out the mood of the pieces more gracefully.
But I won't ding this recording a star just because of my personal preference...these Mendelssohn pieces are wonderful so listen to as many versions as you can and make your own decision!"

"I am not particularly fan of Mendelssohn, but the interpretation of these two supreme artists made me love him. I hope they record a lot more together."
