Maria Muldaur: Heart of Mine; The Love Songs of Bob Dylan, a

"Maria Muldaur's voice and her very tight band (with special guests) may make the now-gravelly voiced Dylan's works palatable for the reluctant listener.

Maria croons Dylan's "Buckets of Rain,"To Be Alone With You," "Make You Feel My Love," "You're Gonna' Make Me Lonesome When You Go," "Golden Loom," "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," and "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" with a comfort developed in her own musically-delicious career. Muldaur (muld-hour) was a young New York City girl while outside her front door the 'Folk Movement' of the 1960's was taking place. She polished her stage presence and vocal talents in the many venues of that day, and since. You remember her jazz-tinged, "Midnight At The Oasis."

She takes "Lay, Lady, Lay," and makes it "Lay, Baby, Lay," a sensuous feminine approach. The title song, "Heart of Mine," is beautiful in its simplicity, treated simply by her band. "Moonlight," "On a Night Like This," and "Wedding Song" round out 49:21 minutes and seconds of delightful work in various tempos. I heard four cuts on National Public Radio and bought it with confidence I would not regret it. I don't, and bought and gave 4 more copies as gifts for Christmas 2009.

I also bought Dylan's "Christmas In The Heart," a wonderful bit of personal fun between the bard and his fans. It's a great repertoire of Christmas favorites you can sing along with. "Must Be Santa" is a true treat for kids to learn. A joke is thrown in for the cognoscenti. I got the Limited Edition Deluxe Package with five blank holiday cards with the 'Currier and Ives-like' CD cover on the front. All proceeds go to feed hungry people, a splendid gesture by a splendid fellow, which was a bonus in this tragic winter of 2009. Find a food pantry in your town. Share a little of your good fortune. You may save a life, and strengthen a soul, especially your own."

"My late husband was Bob Dylan's biggest fan, so much of our 38 years of marriage had Dylan's gravelly voice as background music. So even though Tom is gone, I still feel compelled to fill the house with Dylan's music. This find is a treasure! I've been listening to some of these songs for decades, but Muldaur's interpretation makes many of them really beautiful love songs, something I didn't hear or appreciate in Bob's originals. I love Muldaur's sexy, sassy voice. She really makes me smile."
