The Voice of a Goddess emerges from this CD.
Maximiliano F Yofre | Buenos Aires, Argentina | 03/07/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Juliette Greco (1927) is more than a singer, she is a Goddess! The quality of her voice is very suggestive and sensual with dark passionate tones.

When she was a teenager she joined the French Résistance and was detained by the Gestapo. Released due to her age she found herself penniless in Paris. Her teacher, actress Helen Duc, gave her shelter.

At postwar Paris she dwelled in the Quartier Latin and frequented the "caves" around Saint Germain where artist, poets, students, philosophers & bohemians mixed and give way to a strong existentialist movement.

In 1949 she started a singing career and two years later she launched her first single: "Je suis comme je suis" ("I am what I am") that is the first song of the present CD, where the listener may appreciate her rich shady voice.

In 1954 Juliette was awarded with the "Grand Prix" of the French Association of Songwriters for her song "Je hais les dimanches" ("I Hate Sundays") written by Florence Veran & Charles Aznavour.

In this decade she also performed some songs from the famous writer and composer Georges Brassens as "Chanson pour L'auvergnat" that is the 4th song this album.

In 1963 she recorded "La Javanaise" written for her by Gainsbourg and was an enormous success, it is the 10th song of this CD.

Other notable and very French songs of this CD are "Sous le Ciel de Paris" ("Under Paris' Sky") written by Jean Drejac and composed by Hubert Giraud, "Parlez-Moi d'amour" ("Talk about Love with Me") and "Qu'on est bien" ("One is well") written and musically composed by Guy Beart.

The compositions contained in this CD give the audience a tasteful trip through Parisian music!
