CD Reviews

A rare intimacy

"Joyce Breach is a singer who treads the fine line between jazz and cabaret. On "This Moment" she forgoes the jazz and chooses cabaret and the most intimate kind of cabaret style at that. There are artists who come out you no holds barred and there are those like Joyce Breach who need you to meet them at least half way. The effort will be more than amply rewarded. This in a CD of impeccable taste in many ways. Firstly the choice of song ranging from Gershwin, Sondheim, Loesser and Berlin, to little known songs by John Wallowich, Johnny Mandel and William Roy. Each a gem of its kind. Then there's the overall approach to both the lyrics and the music. William Roy is certainly one of the great accompanists. His work over many years with Julie Wilson in particular is a showcase of his remarkable talents. However the style of Julie Wilson is indeed very different from Joyce Breach and William Roy seemingly effortlessly modifies his style accompanying Joyce in the truest sense of the word. This is not a CD which bowls you over on first hearing. I initially found it too subdued. But it is the kind of CD that the more you listen to (preferably late at night) the more you will discover and cherish."

"Joyce is a magnificent cabaret artist & this is my favorite album of hers. All the CDs are choice, but this remains the one I go back to continually. Poignant lyric readings, a smoky, honeyed tone..."
