CD ReviewsJazz singing supreme Bomojaz | South Central PA, USA | 04/22/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Jon Hendricks is a terrific jazz singer, whether scatting, singing his own usually goofy lyrics to his own tunes, or singing conventional songs - which are often modern jazz standards (SOCIAL CALL, OUT OF THE PAST) with Hendricks lyrics. FEED ME is typical Hendricks daffiness about getting to his heart through his stomach, as is I'LL DIE HAPPY about all the "bad" things he's done but he'll be "the happiest guy in the graveyard." The accompaniments are top rate and include the Adderley brothers, Wes Montgomery, and Pony Poindexter; Jon even sings a song praising some of the cats (the title track, A GOOD GIT-TOGETHER). Fun to listen to and the musicianship is high. Originally recorded in 1959. " Excellent Git-Together Nikica Gilic | Zagreb, Croatia | 06/17/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "Although vocalese is Jon Hendricks' main claim to fame,
this album shows him as a jazz master that he is, genuine giant of modern jazz singing, with expressive hoarse voice, rhythmical flexibility, speed, harmonical imagination.... Joined by the brilliant bands led by Pony Poindexter (alto-sax), Wes Montgomery (guitar), the Adderley brothers (Cannonball on alto-sax, Nat on cornet), plus Gildo Mahones (p), Montgomery's brothers and others, Hendricks presides over an album that sounds very much as a spiritedn jam-session... This seems to be a long awaited digital re-edition of an good old 1959 LP..." |
