Classic early-50s R&B/Swing

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Another good buy in the Legends of Specialty series. This disc features 25 tracks from Liggins and his various R&B/swing big bands. Most of the tracks are from the 1950-51 period, with a few venturing as late as '54. Included is Liggins' #1 hit "Pink Champagne", as well as other chartmakers such as his cover of Johnnie Lee Wills' "Rag Mop", "Little Joe's Boogie" (which also seems to have a strong element of Western Swing rhythm to it), and "Frankie Lee." Also included is Liggins' signature tune "The Honeydripper."Fidelity is excellent, and although not all of the tracks are four-stars, there aren't any real clunkers or filler either. The insert booklet features good liner notes from Billy Vera, and the requisite session info."

"I'm a musician and I'd never heard of Joe Liggins before. A friend of mine and bass player for my band recently played a CD for me by a guy named Larry Williams. He wrote some classic rock songs that became famous by other artist such as the Beatles. Hang with me here, I'm getting to it. He wrote "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," "Slow Down" and "Bad Boy" among otheres. Those of you who are Beatle fans no what I'm talking about. In any case, I went to buy the Larry Williams CD on Amoazon and as you know a listing will come up of other artists you might enjoy. One of those artists was Joe Liggins. I listened to samples of his music and had to buy his CD. It's a great blend of New Orleans Boogie Woogie music. Theres times when a here a hint of Johnny Mercer and other artists from that era. It's great music from a great musician I'm glad to have discoverd. Listen to the samples and you'll see what I mean. Good Stuff."
