CD Reviews

Almost Christmas is Here!
Bystander | Golden State | 12/28/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jim Campilongo's talent and virtuosity shine through like a well-lit Christmas tree on this seasonal mini-album. The three instrumental tracks cover a wide range of styles. The rocking Ventures-inspired opener "Jingle Bells" is guaranteed to get you into the season's spirits. "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" is played reverently with a lonesome, reflective touch. And "Christmas Guitarilongo" has such a loopy good-time feel you'll swear someone spiked the egg nog!

Campilongo's Christmas party has plenty of room for special guests, too. Brandi Shearer lends her low-key halting vocals to "Blue Christmas." Kurt Stevenson offers a touching rendition of "Old Toy Trains." Johnny Dilks celebrates the season honky-tonk style with "All I Want for Christmas is You." Producer Dave Boat takes the mic to introduce the band on "Ladies' Choice." But the real treat is steel guitar legend Bobby Black's rare and heart-warming take on "Mom & Dad's Waltz." A very special Christmas present indeed.

So get into the spirit with "Almost Christmas." Buy two - one for yourself, and one to brighten a special someone's holidays!

"I got this as a gift and I have to say I've been playing it all through the holidays! I'm just getting into jazz guitar from rock and this stuff kind of straddles the line... virtuoso twangy telecaster that reminds me of Duane Eddy turbocharged by Les Paul. The arrangement, especially the steel guitar, make a kind of rich background to counter the bright, swooping lead. It's too good to be country!"
