"Governor Moon Beam, Linda Ronstadt's ex-boy friend,.... Hey, wait a minute! This is JERI Brown, not Jerry Brown. But I tell you what, if Jeri Brown ever runs for governor of anything, she's got my vote....
"I've Got Your Number" is Jeri Brown at her best, and at her best, she's a whole lot better than almost anybody singing jazz today. Ms Brown has an amazing voice with a four octave range. Soaring soprano one moment, plunging into nether alto regions the next, Ms Brown is comfortable almost anywhere on the scale, (and wait until you hear her two "duets" with Leon Thomas).
"I've Got Your Number" was recorded in two separate sessions with different musicians, (the common denominator being master pianist John Hicks - now there's an under-rated guy), but the energy of the performances blends seamlessly - and I use the term "energy" intentionally - this is a studio recording, but it's got the feel of a live performance.
The songs on "I've Got Your Number" are mostly standards, but there's nothing here that will bore even the most jaded jazz listener. Even if you're familiar with the songs, (and with songs like "Midnight Sun," "Nearness of You," and "You Must Believe in Spring," you probably will be), Ms Brown's presentation breathes new life into them. Put this album in your CD player once and I guarantee you'll play it again.
Justin Time Records does an excellent job with the sonics. Ms Brown's voice jumps out of your speakers. Wham! The lady is right there in your room. She's got my number, and I'll bet she gets yours too.
