"If you are astounded, inspired, and made happy by listening to the songs of Franz Schubert, then you'll make for this wonderful Hyperion Schubert Edition. If you like to acquire complete editions, then this will keep you happy and out of pocket for years to come. Over a period of nine years, all the songs of Schubert were recorded and issued. The CDs are top price and the complete edition runs to 37 CDs. This one is Number 4. One critic greeted it as "my favourite so far", and I give it a warm welcome too. Philip Langridge is a fine English tenor who can vocalise the German language with ease and assurance. Graham Johnson, the moving spirit, researcher, program note writer and accompanist throughout the whole series, has chosen "Schubert and His Friends" as the theme for the songs he has allocated to Philip Langridge on this 70 minute CD. Most of the songs are settings of poems by Theodor Körner (1791-1813). In the case of some of the strophic songs (songs in which each verse of the text is set to the same music), a choice is made to omit some verses. "Der Liedler", D 209, is given complete and lasts for 15 minutes. The texts and translations of what is performed are printed in full."
