Canadian Jazz artist Holly Cole deserves far more recognition than she has received in her 30+ year career. Her smoky, sultry vocal style, occasionally reminiscent of Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders hearkens back to jazz clubs of an earlier era. Her 1995 album "Temptation" features the songs of composer Tom Waits, as the Holly Cole Trio transition from their earlier pure jazz sound and embrace a broader repertoire. Holly Cole and her trio shine as they perform a combination of tunes ranging from beat-generation verse in "Train Song" and "Invitation to the Blues", to a distinctly country sound in "Looking for the Heart of Saturday Night". While the styles differ, the album is coherent with a laid-back and strongly nostalgic feel. Standout tracks are the instrumental "Cinny's Waltz", and the vocal "Tango Til They're Sore". A highly recommended album, likely to hook listeners on Holly Cole and The Holly Cole Trio.
