Synopsis

Album Description
This outstanding digipak edition contains one of song master Hoagy Carmichael's best albums ever: the 1956 LP Hoagy Sings Carmichael, featuring the vocalist backed by such modern Jazzmen as Harry Edison, Art Pepper and Jimmy Rowles, and with splendid arrangements by Johnny Mandel. In addition to the complete album Hoagy Sings Carmichael, this release also boasts a second complete LP, The Stardust Road from 1946. As was often the case in the early days of the LP, no new music was recorded for this album, as it was a compilation of selections first issued as 78 rpm discs during previous years. The Stardust Road, in particular, contains recordings made from 1939 to 1947. Hoagy can be heard here again singing his own songs and playing the piano on some tunes, as he was a very special pianist. 21 tracks total. Definitive. 2007

CD Reviews

Perfect late night listening

"This is true jazz singing, and unbelievably relaxed. A treasure of an album. The backing is ideal. The cover photograph is a great portrait, too. Don't miss Hoagy's autobiographies (two versions in one book), which give his memories of the 1920s and how he came to write his songs."
Uniquely beautiful....

"I've played this uniquely beautiful cd over and over since my recent purchase.Hoagy's kind of rough and bluesy voice combined with the absolute perfection of the jazz accompaniment creates a haunting loveliness.I especially love his rendition of (his favorite of all his songs) "Baltimore Oriole"."

"Hoagy Carmichael writes and plays a relaxed coolness on this album. Taking the some of the most versatile cool jazz men of the time with him through the memories of the earlier jazz years to the present-time mid-fifties."
