Hi-Lo's Last Columbia LP

""This Time It's Love" was the last of eight LPs the group recorded for Columbia between 1957-1961. Released at a time when music tastes were rapidly changing (and going decidely against the brand of music the group preferred---sophisticated harmonic work-ups of classic standards), this LP reportedly did not do well and the group was cut from Columbia's roster shortly thereafter.Most of the selections on this LP have a sort of faux latin rhythmic arrangement, which gets very tiresome after a few tunes. To these ears the group sounds weary--as if they know their time is coming to and end.To REALLY hear this incredible group, you're better off getting their earlier Columbia stuff---especially "Suddenly", "All That Jazz" (now called "Harmony In Jazz"); or "Love Nest." Their very early Starlite releases (recorded in '55 and '56) are a good introduction to their development, although their best Starlight recording, "On Hand", which was recorded just before moving on to Columbia, has long been out of print."

"As a big Hi-Lo's fan, I was disappointed with this one. On the whole, they just don't seem very involved in the recording. There are a few good cuts, Tangerine, Besame Mucho, but they succeed largely on the merrit of the songs themselves. The bonus cuts, taken from their earlier recordings with Columbia clearly have much more vitality and energy. The difference is clearly evident. So I would recommend this for comletists only. Go for their two Reprise LP reissues, The Hi-Lo's Happen To Folk Songs, and The Hi-Lo's Happen to Bossa Nova. Two great albums."
