CD ReviewsSubtle music Nikica Gilic | Zagreb, Croatia | 07/17/2007 (5 out of 5 stars) "Helen Merrill, posessing a pleasant voice and great sense of interpretation, is teamed with an interesting group of musicians - on the first half of the album Merrill and the pianist Beck are joined by the soprano master Steve Lacy (I'm not really all that fond of his instrument, but when someone is good, I have to admit it), on the second half they are joined by none other than good old Stephane Grappelli; ellegantly swinging on his violin as had been doing for some 50 years...
In her cool modern explorations (including some overdubbing of herself), Merrill sometimes abandones the sense of swing, but when she swings it is subtle, based on unexpected variations in rhythm and slight melodic twists... Interacting with the musicians, Merrill sometimes silently slides to the background, never hogging the spotlight, although she is the star of this album. Two originals by the singer and the pianist are OK, but the standards... "Round Midnight", "When the Lights are Low", "Lady be good", "Nuages"... Beautiful." |
