"LOVE THAT LUTE SONG!!!!

Fretwork recorded this album with Michael Chance in April of 1989. This is really one of their best albums as to song selection and the time allocated to Chance, which in subsequent albums they tend to minimize. And that's not a good idea because although the string music is quite enjoyable one needs to hear a different tonality every now and then.

The songs sung by Chance are absolute "gems" and he sings them with the greatest artistry and finesse!! There is no singer of lute songs today that can match his renditions. The 6 songs are: "If Women Could Be Fair"-"Lasso Vita mia, mi fa morire"-"Lullaby,my sweet little baby","Goe nightly cares, the enemy to rest"-"Ah Silly Soul" and "Ye Sacred Muses". Fretwork performs"Dances from 'Lachrimae" by John Dowland and Consort Music and songs by William Byrd. Fretwork and Chance are powerfully good musicians and work as one!!!!!!!

Incidentally the album following this one :Dowland and Byrd songs includes this exact CD as their CD one. The second disc is just Fretwork."
