"Having already reviewed her last two Vanguard releases, "Orient Express" and "A Continental Cocktail," I am delighted to report that the latest re-release on CD of the cabaret magic that is Liane, as good or perhaps even a touch better. Though she does not have that smoky voice of Dietrich or the seething drama of Lenya, Liane has her own style and that is quite enough. She is just so friendly that one takes to her singing at once. Again with the Boheme Bar Trio, she treats us to a program of 22 songs that originally appeared on LPs in 1953 and 1955, some of which are quite familiar to us older folk who grew up with them with English lyrics. Most are in German ("Fur dich mein Schatz," "Zwei Verliebte in Wein"), two in French ("J'attendrai," "Chambre separee"), and about a half dozen are instrumentals. It is this welcome balance of vocal and instrumental that made the other Liane offerings easy to take; and if you never heard her before, this CD is as good a place to start as any."
