Synopsis

Album Description
At once subtle and elegant, sultry and soulful, Gail Pettis' rich, warm vocals and understated phrasing have inspired comparisons to Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn and Carmen McRae. The Seattle-based vocalist shines on her debut recording, offering very personal interpretations of standards such as "Black Coffee," "Moonlight in Vermont," "A Certain Smile" and the title track. Pettis also explores less traveled territory with songs like 'Help a Good Girl Go Bad," The Guy I Dream About" and an original, "We've Met Before," by pianist Randy Halberstadt.

CD Reviews

Yes you may come in...
Reginald Hill | 01/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I too just happened to hear Gail Pettis, purely by chance. Just stopped dead in my tracks. I've always had an ear for female vocalist and after 60 years or so I guess I should be able to recognize someone way above ordinary and without any doubt Gail Pettis is up there!

Do I hear subtle shades of Natalie Cole? However, she is far away from copying anyone else's style; all singers are naturally influenced by others, but in due course of time and experience a distinct sound and style emerges. And so here is Gail Pettie coming out the gate and already flying high above the recent trend of mediocre talent hiding inside the finery of the jazz standards wrapped in slick arrangement. There is no substitute for genuine talent! Gail has real talent, originality and potential and it can only get better and better...
