CD Reviews

Another neglected vocalist who deserves to be better known
Bruce R. Gilson | Wheaton, MD United States | 12/26/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Except for the duet with Tony Martin, "I Said My Pajamas and Put On My Pray'rs," Fran Warren is a sadly-neglected vocalist. She is another one of a large group who came out of the Big Band era and tried to make it as a solo vocalist. Some of them did very well in the late '40s and early '50s, but others, like Fran Warren, never seemed to catch on.

This CD does not include "I Said My Pajamas..." (which is available on a lot of CDs anyway, so that is not a major loss), but does contain a large number of tracks that don't often see the light of day. Typically (because of European performance-rights rules) it stops at the point 50 years before it was assembled, so it includes only some of her RCA Victor work and not the later songs she recorded for MGM.

Most of the tracks are familiar songs ("I Almost Lost My Mind" is far better known as a Rock'n'Roll Era recording by Pat Boone, for example, but many of the others were hits for other artists around the same time as Fran Warren's recordings), but a few are unfamiliar. All sound pretty good, however.

If you like the traditional pop music of the late '40s and early '50s, or you like the Broadway show tunes of that era, give this CD a listen."
