CD Reviews

Ravishing!
G P Padillo | Portland, ME United States | 04/14/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A truly wonderful documentation of one of the world's greatest tenors at his early years of the career. For those who are only familiar with the later voice of Di Stefano, (which in my opinion was still quite beautiful) this recording will astonish you with a voice that is astonishingly beautiful.

The tenor possessed such a freedom of range with an almost effortless liquid quality to the voice back in those days that didn't last nearly long enough. Fortunate for us many examples of this amazing singing were recorded and are presented here.

His "E lucevan le stelle" has rarely been equaled. Sung with a heartbreaking innocence and sincerity right through the now famous diminuendo. It really is breathtaking. The Massenet numbers are filled with charm beauty, and even when sung (as several are) in Italian, they exude a Frenchness to them that is simply ravishing. The same goes with the two arias from Thomas's Mignon with "Addio, Mignon" going straight to the heart. Traviata's "De' miei bollenti spiriti" is sung here about as perfect as one is likely to hear it and "Che Gelida Manina" must be heard to be believed.

This generous (16 arias) recording really is a must-have for any fan of the great tenor, and for those who never heard Di Stefano's early years - well, now's your chance, so treat yourself!

One of my very favorite solo CD recitals."
