The cello concerto of Edward Elgar is one of the most openly emotional of his works, and the final piece of orchestral music he ever wrote. Performed by the incomparable Li-Wei and accompanied by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Nicholas Braithwaite, this recording sings of unequivocal heartbreak. Also featured is the song Cycle Sea Pictures For Mezzo-Soprano and Orchestra, which evokes the beauty and the excitement of the sea, along with the prelude from the kingdom, an oratorio of great lyrical splendour.
