Wir Schwestern Zwei, Wir Schoenen
Smorgy | Southern California, USA | 07/28/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

""Wir Schwestern Zwei, Wir Schonen" is the title of this CD when it was released in Europe back in 1995.

And what a pair of coloratura sisters Gruberova and Kasarova are! Their voices match perfectly in these charming duets by Brahms, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Schumann, Rossini and Dvorak. Kasarova's full dark mahogany voice compliments Gruberova's light coloratura voice and vice versa. Even though these two sing very differently on the operatic stage, they are in perfect sync singing short lieder-duets. The disc is jam packed with 22 of them. Mostly lively fun duets with a few more subdue ones by Schumann.

The highlights have to be Dvorak's charming 12 Moravian duets and the ending 'Cats' Duet' by ....er.. well, most attributes it to Rossini, tho it is quite an open dispute if the Bel Canto master was the real author or if it was the English Robert Pearsall. Whoever wrote it, it is the coolest meowing contest ever in my book. Kasarova is the full voiced more refined sounding cat, while Gruberova cat is more playful. The ladies are very ably accompanied on the piano by Friedrich Haider (Gruberova's husband).

The booklet comes with short notes on the composers and libretto in English and German (the Moravian Duets have additional Czech libretto, and Rossini's Venetian Regatta has additional Italian libretto)."
