Good, but not great

"I was looking for a Stephen Foster CD that was not "jazzed up" and maintained the closest fidelity to the old-time recordings. This CD did not disappoint. Most of the renditions of the lesser-known Foster classics are excellent. "Old Black Joe" is particularly moving. My only problem is with the two old standards: Camptown Races and Oh! Susanna. I get the impression that the vocalist was trying to put his own "stamp" on these two very familiar tunes by accenting odd syllables or using strange intonations. At any rate, they ended up sounding cheesy so that my family members ended up making fun of the idiosyncracies introduced by the singer rather than singing along with the familiar words and melody. Oh! well..."

"I have thoroughly enjoyed discovering the full scope of Foster's musical genius through this biography and album of popular Foster songs, choral gems, piano delights, and chamber music arrangements. Douglas Jimerson and Sheryl Cohen have the ideal voices for Foster's beautiful parlor songs."
Excelleny CD.
