Synopsis

Best remembered as the squeaky clean, quintessentially wholesome American professional-virgin-next-door in a successful series of light romantic Hollywood comedies (not bad for a woman born Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff), Doris Day initially built her career as a distinctive-voiced pop and jazz singer. To the uninitiated, her voice will come as pleasant surprise--subtly sexual, sometimes sassy, and always inviting, especially in her early, more jazz-inflected work. Culled from early live radio broadcasts, this generous double-disc collection showcases Day at the beginning of her successful singing career and serves as a fine, often revealing introduction to her talents as a musician. --Jerry McCulley

CD Reviews

A superb album
Scotty | Tx USA | 11/08/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is Doris Day at her best. While some of the songs are of the snappy, upbeat variety, most are the warm, slow, soft songs you would like to listen to at night with the lights low after a hard day's work, songs that Doris Day excells in singing. Unfortunately, this kind of artistry is hard to find these days. We are fortunate to have had Ms.Day pass our way and leave us with such a wonderful musical legacy. There is not a weak number on the album. A must for Doris Day fans!"

"This CD features great stuff from the late 40's through the early 50's. You may not be familiar with DD this early in her recording career, but it's well worth this trip down memory lane! There's some great material here, and DD is in fine form!"
