Here's a terrific disc of unusual Copland. The Short Symphony has been universally acclaimed as one of the composer's masterpieces, but it's so rhythmically tricky to perform it's almost never played live. The composer himself made a chamber music reduction believing that this would encourage more exposure, but thanks to recordings, the music has been preserved and disseminated in its original form. Russel Davies, a contemporary music specialist, turns in the what sounds like the best performance around. And the couplings--the highly enjoyable Dance Panels and the marvelous Dickinson Poems--are just as fine. --David Hurwitz
