Synopsis

Album Description
Fresh from his paint-the-town-red stay in Las Vegas during the filming of "Oceans 11" with the Rat Pack, Dino plunged into his most ambitious album to date with 1960?s ?This Time I?m Swingin??, which enlisted the considerable talents of arranger Nelson Riddle to craft a big-band standards album on a par with what Nelson had achieved for Dean?s pal Frank Sinatra.

CD Reviews

Fine Dean Martin album--BRAVO, DEAN MARTIN !!!
Matthew G. Sherwin | last seen screaming at Amazon customer service | 06/21/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This Time I'm Swingin'! is an outstanding album of great tunes and hits from the singularly talented Dean Martin. Hearing Dean's voice is like listening to pure silk; and he doesn't disappoint on this album. The quality of the sound is very good; and that artwork is excellent.

"I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me" starts the CD with a fine, strong number that features Dean swinging gently to make this a great tune. Dean's uncanny sense of timing impresses me and the brass is used to great advantage. This upbeat tune celebrates the excitement and joy a man feels when the woman he loves returns his love--great! "I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me" is a bright tune to start the album; and that's grand. "True Love" shines every bit as brightly; and when Dean sings this I could never tire of hearing it. Dean performs a more modern version of this classic love song and it all holds its own very well. I love every minute of it! In addition, "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" really draws me in; this number is one of my very favorite classic pop vocals of all time and Dino croons it with all his heart and soul. "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You" stuns me with its beauty and I always prefer Dean Martin's rendition of this tune.

"On The Street Where You Live" comes from the musical called My Fair Lady; and Dean gives this the royal treatment in a way that no other singer ever quite could. Dean's treatment of this song features his great diction and he delves into this ballad to make it his own by playing a bit with the tempo here and there as well as singing this with a lot of feeling. "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" is another exquisite melody about a love breakup; even though the subject matter is somewhat serious the upbeat melody of this tune makes it sound rather positive and upbeat--what a neat trick! "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" is a prime example of a classic pop vocal and that's excellent.

"I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" also comes from My Fair Lady; and Dean does this absolutely well. It's sublime! Dean sings this passionately and his tempo changes again save the day and make this rendition far superior to the version by Rex Harrison in the play and movie--primarily because Rex Harrison didn't really sing his lines, he almost spoke them because he wasn't a singer. Listen sometime to Rex Harrison's version of this song and you'll immediately see what I mean. In addition, "Just In Time" again showcases Dean Martin front and center--where he belongs! "Just In Time" is relentlessly upbeat and the brassy melody is catchy and memorable at once.

"You And Your Beautiful Eyes" has a great melody and Dean never sings a superfluous note; and the album ends well with Dean Martin performing "Choo'n Gum." This cute little number fits in well, believe it or not; and the album leaves you wanting more!

Dean Martin was one of the greatest male vocalists who ever lived; and this album and his others prove it very well. This is a must-have for Dino's fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will like this CD, too.

One of Dino's All-Time Best

"It was only a matter of time that Dean Martin would collaborate with arranger Nelson Riddle. "This Time I'm Swingin'!" (1960) finds Dino in high spirits - backed by Riddle's solid orchestration and stronger-than-usual material. Memorable tracks include "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," "Imagination," "Just in Time" and "Until the Real Thing Comes Along." The result is one of Martin's all-time best albums and the only Capitol effort that evokes the classic Riddle-Sinatra recordings."
One of the best Dino albums

"This is one of the best Dean albums I have. Nelson Riddle, Franks arranger helped on this one and it turned out great. None of those odd background vocals on here just pure Dean and the music is superb. A must for anyone wanting a true Dino sound."
