Synopsis

Album Description
Carmen McRae sang with remarkable rhythmic ease and her deft turns-of-phrase helped to conceal a relatively limited range, while her ballad singing revealed enormous emotional depths. Her repertoire included many popular items from the Great American Songbook, but her jazz background ensured that she rarely strayed outside the idiom. Relaxed and unpretentious in performance and dedicated to her craft, McRae secured a place of honor in the history of jazz singing. This album is a labor of love. Carmen McRae loves San Francisco and Sugar Hill, Sugar Hill and San Francisco love Carmen McRae, making this a perfect place to record her amazing voice. Originally recorded in 1962, and features Norman Simmons, Victor Sproles & Stu Martin. 10 total tracks. Stereo Time. 2005.

CD Reviews

The jazz singer

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Carmen is very expressive on this. Sweet, too, when appropriate. The sound is very much a live in the club date. This was a find for me having owned the lp years ago. Along with Carmen Sings Billie (Columbia) released s little later, this is the lady at her jazziest. I expect this will become rare fast as there surely hasn't been many copies released. If you are a fan, recommend you buy it."

"Carmen has long been my all time favorite jazz vocalist. Like most musicians, their best recordings are live. Live at Sugar Hill is Carmen's best. This was recorded when she was at the top of her game with great backup musicians. I had the original vinyl and was ecstatic to find it had finally been re-mastered for a CD."
