CD Reviews

Great but missing some songs
John C. Cox | Seneca, SC United States | 12/12/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I love this album. If it had all the songs the old vinyl did, it would be the best Christmas album in the world. This CD is missing: "Sleigh Ride", "Little Fir Tree" and most importantly "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas". Those were the best songs on the album."
Why didn't they include all of the songs?

"I would have otherwise given this CD 5 Stars or more since it's one of the happiest Christmas albums EVER. I compared it with my original, scratchy, vinyl version of the same album and this CD is missing: "Sleigh Ride", "Little Fir Tree" and most importantly "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas". I stupidly assumed that a CD with the same title would have all of the songs of the original."Hippopotamus" is THE reason to own this album and the worst song I could think of to leave off of the CD. Everyone I have spoken to who loved this album as a child says the same thing.A bit disappointing. Find a scratchy vinyl copy with ALL of the songs."
Great Album, Unfortunate Editing

"This was THE Christmas album for me as I was growing up in the '60s and '70s. My mother still has the original scratched-up vinyl copy. What really makes it unique (in addition to some original songs written for the album) is the dialogue between the captain and Mr. Green Jeans between the songs. It really allows children use their imagination and feel like they are out in the snow, etc., with the characters. The dialogue also leads into the songs and sets up wonderful scenes in the mind's eye.I was amazed when I found this album on CD a few years ago. I always thought it was too obscure of a Christmas album to be released on CD. Get it while you can and enjoy!Note: I gave this current CD version of the album 4 stars because of the unfortunate deletion of 3 songs from the original album (I love the missing "Little Fir Tree" - where else would you hear this song!). I was fortunate, however, to have purchased the CD on the "Drive Archive" label (also found on this website, but "out of stock" - probably forever). That 1998 release had all 17 songs from the original album. It is unbelievable that the current label which has released the CD this time around has deleted 3 songs! Why???!!!"
